What We've Learned from Running Hundreds of STEM Events

Patterns from real events that make hands-on STEAM experiences work for different group sizes and communities.

By David Martelli

Great STEM events are not just about exciting equipment. They work because the challenge is clear, the materials are approachable, and participants can succeed quickly enough to stay engaged while still having room to improve.

After running programs for classrooms, scouts, libraries, camps, and large community groups, we have learned that structure matters. Short build cycles, visible goals, and multiple ways to participate help mixed-age groups stay active.

The best events leave people with a feeling of momentum. They walk away saying, 'I made that,' and they can imagine what they want to try next.
